The major ingredients for making a wall paint? While a normal paint starts with Solvent, Pigment and binder, for a wall paint it’s slightly different. For an interior wall paint, the most important ingredients are:
- A binder; mostly this is a dispersion of Acrylic (polymer), Styrene Acrylic (Copolymer) or Vinyl-Ethylene (VAE Copolymer). The solvent is included in the binder
- A pigment; often used is titaniumdioxide (TiO2)
- Additives; for optimal drying and application performance
Why different polymers are used
There are several reasons to use different dispersion based waterbased polymers:
- Acrylics; Allround base for many applications, interior and exterior
- Styrene Acrylics; More economic version of Acrylics
- Vinyl-Acetate-Ethylene; special benefits like: Low VOC, reducing TiO2, reducing CO2 footprint; non yellowing

Intercol is a specialist in VAE compounds. For interior wall paints, we developed some special formulations with VAE. The VAE copolymer is unique because of it’s uv-stabilility, low VOC and increased hiding power. Furthermore, special terpolymerized grades can be used such as:
- Vinyl-acetate-ethylene-ACRYLICS; with even lower Tg, improved adhesion and wet scrub resistance
- Vinyl-acetate-ethylene-Chloride; increased flame retardancy and very high wet scrub resistance
If you have goals for:
- Reducing VOC
- Reducing CO2 footprint
- Reducing or replacing TiO2
- High colour stability (non yellowing)
- Long lasting (construction) applications
